Retail prices follow patterns. They aren't guaranteed, but knowing when stores usually discount can save you a lot on big purchases. Always confirm with price history, since a "sale" price isn't always low.

Electronics

TVs

Besides Black Friday, TVs are often discounted in the weeks before the big US football game in late January/early February, and older models drop in spring as new lineups arrive.

Furniture and mattresses

Holiday weekends such as Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day are traditional furniture and mattress sale periods. Many furniture makers introduce new styles in the new year and late summer, so older pieces may be marked down around January and July/August.

Appliances

The same holiday weekends often bring appliance sales, and stores may clear previous-year models in the fall when new ones arrive.

Clothing

End-of-season clearance is the most reliable pattern: winter clothing tends to be cheapest in January and February, summer clothing in July and August. Back-to-school and Black Friday sales also hit apparel.
