How to Find Coupon Codes That Actually Work

You find a "40% off" code, paste it in at checkout, and get "this code is invalid." Here's why that happens so often and how to waste less time on dead codes.

Why so many coupon codes don't work

Where working codes usually come from

1. The store itself

Check the store's own "deals," "offers," or "promotions" page and banners on the homepage. A first-order discount for signing up for email or texts is common. Use a separate shopping email to keep your main inbox clean.

2. Signed-in cart reminders

Some retailers email a discount when a signed-in shopper leaves items in the cart. It isn't guaranteed, but if the purchase can wait a day, it costs nothing to try.

3. Coupon browser extensions

Extensions such as Capital One Shopping, Honey, and RetailMeNot try known codes at checkout for you, which saves the copy-paste routine. They won't find a code every time, because sometimes none exists. See are coupon extensions safe? before installing one.

4. Search with the date

Searching "[store] promo code [month year]" tends to surface fresher listings. Prefer listings that show when the code was last verified.

Read the fine print before you give up

If a code fails, check the minimum order, excluded items, and whether it applies only to full-price products. Removing a sale item from the cart sometimes makes a code work for the rest.

Quick checklist

  1. Check the store's own deals page.
  2. Sign up with a shopping email for a first-order code.
  3. Leave items in your cart while signed in, if you can wait.
  4. Let an extension test codes, or search with the current month.
  5. Read the exclusions.
